It has to fulfil the highest quality requirements to suit its task. • By contact of the stylus tip with the workpiece, a probing sensor determines the geometrical position of the contactpoint in the X, Y and Z axes and feeds it back to the controller unit and CMM software. • Touch point and scanning probe systems define the specification of the stylus. • To build perfect styli that suit this specification, properties like stiffness (modulus of elasticity), thermal expansion, weight and sphericity of the ball have to be taken in consideration. Because of the adhesive material build up, the scanning of aluminium surfaces with ruby tips is not recommended. Silicon nitride Silicon nitride is extremely hard and superbly wear resistant, with the least surface roughness of all ball materials, which makes it highly applicable for most scan applications. Silicon nitride does not attract aluminium particles when scanning aluminium workpiece surfaces. Zirconium oxide Because of the specific surface properties of contact points made of zirconium oxide - a ceramic compound with high wear resistance – they are acknowledged as the best choice for the scanning of abrasive surfaces, such as workpieces made of cast iron. Zirconium oxide provides a smooth and frictionless sliding performance on rough surfaces. Diamond coating Diamond coated silicon nitride balls are true allrounders, made to suit all applications and to last long. Due to their durability, they posses an excellent price performance ratio.
